What defines you from everyone else?
Well, I'm unique just like everyone else, we all are, but I do things my way, so there is madness to my method, a harmony between the many contradictory aspects of my personality, an appreciation for beauty, irony and chaos and a heightened attunement to the grand scheme of things and a belief in my own intuition. I value my imperfections as much as my excellencies and I've been told by people at various points in my life to never change, to never let the dark aspects of humanity and all the dull people included within it to grind me down and to lose that special almost childlike optimism and the imagination that goes with it and I don't believe it has diminished one jot. I will always be a dreamer, an innocent, no matter how experienced or wise. I would go anywhere with an open heart and mind and I always know what I am doing, even when I am making it up as I go along. I embrace an off the cuff approach and prefer silliness to formality.
Should people take notice of what you're doing?
Of course, I've been looking for the truth, embracing every experience, spending time with as many people as I can, collecting stories and creating them with a poetic style of living, so that one day I can convey this to other people and hopefully enlighten them with what I've learnt about the peculiarities of existence and the marvellous characters in this world. When I write this book that will be my life's work and as I do it for other people so that they don't have to, I hope they will take notice, after all, I did it for them. At the moment I am doing a lot of things and having a lot of fun and yes I'm all for people taking notice and perhaps joining in this fun. I love collaborating with people. I will hopefully cast my old fashionedness aside and get a website in the future. Carlyflorentine.com coming soon, in the meantime, feel free to find me on facebook, especially web-developers!
What do you feel is the driving force behind change?
Escapism from the mundane and the pursuit of novelty and betterment and a no nonsense refusal to accept the inferior.
What has been a conscious influence to your working practice?
All my muses and copious amounts of caffeine.
In 2 years time, how do you imagine your life to be?
More interesting, more varied, just more. Apart from poor, less of that, in the future please, ta.
Who do you aspire to work with?
Which film has had the biggest impact on your life?
My favourite film is Jules et Jim and I gather from that I have developed an empathy for the complexities of love and friendship and an appreciation of the virtues of camaraderie, style, adventure and individualism, oh and the desire to be French! I think any film that depicts its characters as outsiders apart from conventional society and untroubled by its disapproval, with butterfly precepts, pretty vices, romantic orientations and a good mixing of convivial habits to have had a big impact on my design for my life.
The meaning of the word 'Art' is subject to personal interpretation. What is your personal definition?
I actually had to write a 3.500 word essay on this topic at University, I feel as though it has come back to haunt me! In many fewer words it's when creativity is employed to explore the ineffable or to render something nameable as ridiculous. It is skills spent stirring thoughts and emotions.
How did you get to where you are now?
By never saying no to any opportunity, you've seen yes man, yes? Then have oodles of self discipline. Don't expect to be able to have a normal life, you have to make sacrifices, may I recommend cutting out sleep, rubbish television and doomed relationships; huge assassins of time, should be saved for when your elder and of a more exhausted disposition, an opium for inadequacies and mere laziness in the young. Life's amazing if you live it.
Are there any rising talents in music, you believe will gain/or should deserve global recognition?
Toys with Knives. I adore them.
